Mod Tools for MW2?
« on: December 14, 2009, 04:51:47 AM »
From BashandSlash.com:

Quote
A few hours ago Rob Bowling at Infinity Ward let this piece of news out on Twitter after being asked about dedicated servers and modding tools (thanks to Lamonte for the tip):

Quote
@CprlRst Nothing on Dedicated Servers, but there may be some Mod Tools news coming in the future, I'll pass it along once I have it.

    -Rob Bowling

Let the speculation begin

Traditionally mod tools are for folks making new maps.

By providing us with "Mod Tools", IW could indeed provide us with the ability to make new maps, say...but of course that would still mean that you would have to run the maps through IW.net.

Fresh from being acclaimed the geniuses behind the Shooter of the Year at the posh VGA's, I don't think anyone at IW will question their strategy to date. By that I mean that I think they will not acquiesce to the PC community's request for Dedi's and Mod Tools "as we have known them".

It is too early to understand what Bowling meant in his Tweet of course but I think it would be a safe bet that whatever modding will occur it will be on Infinity Ward's terms.

How will we play the new maps?

BASHandSlash.com reader Lamonte has a good theory:

"Maybe just custom maps for private matches. Or a system like Battle.NET back in the day for WC3. If they do it like BNET that means they'll have to add in a lobby system".

Whatever they do, I'd be surprised they will get any of this done before the end of January as most of their team is still on vacation.

What about DLC?
Providing us with the ability to make maps could undermine IW's ability to sell us downloadable-content. However, I can see IW meeting us halfway on this one.

After all...there were no games that could touch MW2 a few weeks ago. Now BF:BC2 and MoH are yapping at its heels. IW might need to woo back some of the PC guys after all.

Personally, I think the mod tools will be primarily to make custom content for Single Player and the Spec Ops mode of MW2.

Either way, I'm not bothered. I just want mod tools for it.

Information we will never see from 402. :P Wouldn't be the first time, check out the IW forums -- 402 posted some smart ass comments earlier in the AM today after weeks of hiding + making promises that he failed to deliver (ie: he promised one chick a Prestige ed. of the game if she got an IW tattoo, she got the tattoo and no Prestige) and people in uproar, even a moderator who got stripped of his mod status for an outburst at 402 in public.

Anyhow, I wonder if Mike Denny is spear heading anything to do with mod tools... I can't imagine anyone else at IW caring about modding. =o/

Personally I would love to see some mod tools. There isn't as bigger focus on co-op unlike WaW so therefore the tools would mainly be for MP or if anyone is good with SP scripting and effects then possibly an SP campaign or spec ops. Wether IW are thinking, they won't be able to make maps as good as ours and people will still buy our DLC or they think well the PC community is so small now it won't make a difference (in terms of Profits) allowing custom content, we might as well allow mods and release tools and sell an extra 5,000 copies.

They WOULD make more money if they allowed dedicated servers through IWNET but you had to buy them from IW. This way they could charge 27d per slot so:

IW Price
27p per slot, 32 man server, £8 and 64p PLUS £10 to allow custom content puts it at £18 1/2 a month and if you want you can add on an extra £7 1/2 and get your onw clan site and a free 18 man clan server and so on.

This way IW can make more money, we get our mods and eliminate all the problems caused by IWNET and IW can still pump out DLC!

I think this is a better alternative for us and IW.

People are getting hung up about DLC as a reason not to give any mod tools. The argument goes:

They wont give mod tools because they want you to buy their DLC

This is bogus. DLC would be for ranked servers. Custom content cant be played ranked, so it cant compete with DLC.

they gave mod tools with COD4 and still had DLC. The DLC was good for those who only want to play on ranked servers.

It would be different if custom content could be played on ranked servers.

You want zombies with modern weapons? This might be your chance ...

There are so many (more than WaW) things we can do, even if single and spec ops were available (easier, i won't say MP would be impossible or difficult). I just put this game down and started back on MW1 and WaW, dangit, my interest is peaked again ...

That would depend on how the weapon files are setup. Assuming they aren't too different from the WaW/CoD4 ones, in theory, it might be possible.

Hope someone makes my VIP chase in the Blackout village a reality.  :)

Juggernaut - A perk in CoD4, a drink in CoDWaW and now a freaking hard-to-kill bad guy in CoDMW2.

I would probably buy the game if it had mod tools, even though the lack of detail.

Thanks for the news, but "Yeah, whatever."  I finished the campaign, played some SP coop (can't find anyone cause my NAT is strict), one or two times multiplayer, and haven't touched MW2 since (though my son love it).  Don't like multiplayer mode.

IW is just throwing us PC gamers a bone, hoping to quiet us down. I'm giving up on MW series. Maybe the next time I play with it, DS and mods will be back. Doubt it though. The only thing that talks is the color of money, everything else is BS.

Oh sorry, I forgot, IMHO.
